Hands on with Android 4.0 ICS on the Droid RAZR MAXX

Verizon's finally pushing out the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX, bringing Moto's U.S. flagship. This moves the RAZRs up to what is for the next day or so, the latest version of the OS. Starting right at the top, you'll notice a re-vamped lock screen, allowing you to choose to unlock normally, or launch directly into one of three apps -- the phone, camera or text messaging.

The home screen launcher has changed a fair bit too. You still get five screens to customize, but gone is the Motorola-styled launcher of old, an in its place sits the sleek stock Android launcher, albeit without the persistent Google search bar. That means you get a horizontal-scrolling list of apps, and widgets can be selected by long-pressing them and adding them to the home screen. Face unlock is included too, for whatever that's worth -- we think it's pretty clear by now that that's a bit of a gimmick.You also get the new ICS browser, which is nice, and the ability to use Chrome Beta for Android if you want.

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Is 'Gravely Ill'

'When Harry Met Sally ... ' and 'Sleepless In Seattle' writer is not expected to survive the night, TMZ reports.

Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally ... " and "Sleepless in Seattle" among other hit films, is reportedly "gravely ill" and "not expected to make it through the night."

TMZ reports that family members are currently telling close friends of the writer/director "there is little hope that [Ephron] will recover from her current condition." The nature of her illness is not currently known, though it's been reported that Ephron is suffering from leukemia.

Word of Ephron's condition first hit the Internet on Tuesday (June 26) by way of an article published by journalist Liz Smith, a close friend of the legendary Hollywood screenwriter. In the column, Smith writes about Ephron as though she has already passed away, praising her friend's "grave" and "unexpected" humor.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Shortly after publication of Smith's column, Ephron's former close friend Margo Howard wrote on Twitter: "A very accomplished writer died. Nora Ephron, from cancer."

Ephron's publisher Knopf later told The New York Times that Ephron is "still alive," according to a tweet from Times writer Julie Bosman. Knopf rep Elizabeth Lindsay said as much in a statement to the Atlantic Wire: "It's pretty critical. She's not doing well, but she's certainly alive ... The report she has passed away is not correct."

How to Upgrade Electric Service

Why is it needed?

Montepaschi promotes Banchi to head coach spot

Montepaschi Siena announced on Friday that its new coach will be none other than Luca Banchi, who has already spent a long time on the bench of the Italian powerhouse. Banchi, age 46, had been the assistant of Simone Pianigiani, who resigned the head coaching position earlier this week, for the last six seasons. Together, they helped place Montepaschi in both the 2008 and 2011 Final Fours. Banchi helped the club reach new heights in Italian basketball by winning six consecutive Italian League crowns, a first in the 63-year history of the competition. The team also won 4 Italian Cup titles and lifted 5 Italian Supercup trophies with Banchi as assistant coach. In his six seasons helping Pianigiani, Montepaschi accumulated a 225-28 Italian League record, winning 90.1% of their games and doing even better (59-6, 90.8%) in the playoffs. Banchi has previous head coach experience in teams like Sicc BPA Jesi, Banca Nuova Trapani, Mabo Livorno and Trieste. He has also coached the Italian U20 and "B" national teams.

"It is with great pride that I begin this new adventure with Siena," Banchi said at a press conference Friday. "I know and am happy to continue the path we've been on. The modus operandi of Siena's technical staff is in perfect working condition. Building a staff will be a great consideration. I've always felt a responsibility during the six years I have put in here to do what I do best: coaching! Coach Pianigiani shared everything with us, so it's a change in my role, but the commitment and responsibilities are the same."

Just what we need more condo?s. While i agree that site is a bit of an eyesore,West Seattle is getting overrun with Apts and Condo?s, also the Bridge is already a parking lot at peak times.There are only so many people the present infastructure will support.

I don?t think we will see new condos built anytime soon. There is no market for them still. But apartments, yes. The vacancy rate in Seattle right now is like 2%. It is crazy which is why so many new buildings are going up. So, one could argue new apartments are exactly what Seattle needs, purely based on economics.

Pam, normally I?d agree?not a big fan of the squeeze myself (though I do feel good knowing it?s helping minimize urban sprawl, at least on some level). Maybe you don?t live in the Morgan neighborhood; one of these businesses is a magnet for the transients who come and buy cheap beer and crash in the ?family? park. There is litter, there is noise?just not a benefit to the neighborhood IMHO. I feel worse for the dry cleaner as I used to do a lot of business there. Overall, I think a new building will be a plus and welcome anything besides what?s there now.

Chuck and sally?s van man, i live one block away from there, and yes i agree it attracts transients, but i am sure the land could be put to a better use for the community other than more apts. And the park for family?s is already placed next to two bars. Kgdig almost every apt building i pass had apts for rent i am sure the vacancy rate is much higher than 2%.

While the area needs some change for the better, I don?t know if apartments are the answer. What I see going up in West Seattle aren?t very attractive and I question the overkill. Property owners by and large always take better care than renters.
Perhaps my biggest concern is whether the TOD sites mean the developers don?t have to bother providing parking for their residences. I can?t seem to find a definitive answer, and am worried we are headed in the same frustrating direction as Seattle proper with cars and parking issues. West Seattle seems to be the final frontier for the free and easy-parking that is.

Parking is not required in urban villages in Seattle. I will find out if Morgan counts as one of these. Most lenders, even with this code, require developers to build some parking at least.

I have to boldly disagree with the statement above that ?owners by and large always take better care than renters.? I think this is a complete falsehood perpetrated by the ownership, often elite, in this country and not at all based in fact. You know how many slumlords exist in this world? LOTS. And renters and neighborhoods suffer because of them.

This is the perfect site for increased density. Next to many bus lines, shopping and food. In my opinion, if we don?t put apartments on main arterials, where should they go? In single family neighborhoods? This is what keeps our single family areas intact. As mentioned above, the numbers support this development ? there are not enough apartments in Seattle right now and unless we build more, rents will continue to sky rocket. It is bad out there right now. And while I am cranky?I believe the design flaws that we all complain about so much are as much a result of capitalism than anything else. Private investors and places like pension funds build these buildings and they could care less about award winning design. Take a look at your 401k next time the statement comes, I bet some ofit is in real estate?

Meet Harry Potter: Alan Moore's Magical Antichrist

The Boy Who Lived gets a hellacious makeover in the pages of Moore's latest 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' comic book.

"Harry Potter" is not for everyone. Some people do not like fun. Some people do not like magic. Some people do not like fun and magic together. I get it, and I accept it. Harry hate isn't something I'm into, but if that's your position, have a ball. You'll get no killing curses out of me.

But killing curses are flying, it seems, from the wand of Alan Moore.

The critically acclaimed and famously reclusive "Watchmen" writer is drawing a harder line against the boy wizard than even the staunchest "Potter" hater could dream up as the latest installment of Moore's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 2009," out in stores Wednesday (June 20), features Harry Potter as the Antichrist. Well, almost, at least.

There's an undeniable resemblance between Potter and Moore's Antichrist. How startling are the similarities, you ask? Let's count the ways: Moore's character has a notable scar, a mentor named Riddle (the real last name of Potter's lifelong nemesis, Lord Voldemort) and travels to a magic school by way of a magic train hidden in King's Cross station, just like the Boy Who Lived. There is no mention of the words "Harry" or "Potter," but the result is clear: Moore has cast an analogue of J.K. Rowling's globally renowned hero as his very own Antichrist.

But don't start shipping Howlers off in Moore's direction just yet, "Potter" heads, at least not until you get the full meaning of what the writer is going for here.

In an early review of the new issue of "Century 2009," the Independent's Laura Sneddon analyzes Moore's choice as follows: "The headlines almost write themselves — 'Alan Moore says Harry Potter is the Antichrist!' — yet they miss the point. When the Antichrist is met, overgrown and high on anti-psychotics, raging at the education system that let him down and sounding peculiarly like Harry Enfield's teenage Kevin, he is surely no stand-in for one particular character but of the current obsession for replacing stories with money-generating franchises. Today, film rights are bought before publication, comics are written as storyboards, and teenage celebrities are given memoirs."

"What better representative of modern pop literature than J K Rowling's boy wizard?" Sneddon continues. "Moore's distaste for modern culture is made obvious, in keeping with his stance on the comics publishers he feels betrayed him."

Indeed, it certainly doesn't go unnoticed that "Potter" is a part of the Warner Bros. family, the very same company backing DC Comics' controversial "Before Watchmen" prequel series against Moore's wishes; turnabout is fair play, after all. Moore's choice of Potter as an Antichrist figure isn't necessarily directed at that character or franchise itself, then — instead, he's using the most famous, most recognizable and most relevant face possible to get his anti-franchise point across the table.

"Before Watchmen" Confirmed: Will More Movies Follow?

Is Potter the best option to make such a point? At first, I didn't think so. Haters are going to hate, but the "Potter" books, if not excellently written, are compelling stories with compelling characters who have introduced new readers the entire world over to the fantastic realm of literature. The films, too, aren't just commercial juggernauts, but critically acclaimed ones boasting top-tier talents such as Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon — the list goes on and on and on. There is strong craftsmanship on display in the "Potter" series on numerous levels. Why target something that's actually good rather than, say, a series that hinges on hollow, vampire-obsessed protagonists? (Hate mail can be sent this way, FYI.)

But in truth, "Potter" doesn't end with the stories. The books are closed, the theaters are empty. (For now.) But there's a whole new wizarding world out there: theme parks, online encyclopedias, unofficial off-Broadway shows and countless other parodies, toys, candy, more. I wouldn't go as far as saying "Potter" replaces story with money-generating greediness, as Moore seems to believe. But there's no denying that "Potter" really is more than just a collection of books and films: It's a lifestyle, not just for fans, but for flesh-and-blood, real-world muggles who keep the Rowling-manufactured train rolling ahead full steam.

If you're looking for an instantly recognizable face to hang your broader anti-franchise sentiments upon, then? Well, I suppose you really don't need to look any further than Hogwarts' finest.

As a "Potter" fan, I don't like seeing Harry used as a symbol of what's wrong in the world today. I'd like to think that there are better examples out there. But if you're looking at what Moore's trying to say here, maybe there really isn't a better example for him to use. Harry isn't just the Boy Who Lived anymore, after all; he is, inarguably, the Boy Who Lived Luxuriously.

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James has never been here before.

He's been in nearly every imaginable situation everything over his nine seasons marked by three MVP awards, three trips to the NBA Finals with two teams and one decision that changed everything.

And now this: For the first time, he's one win from a championship.

"I have a job to do," James said Wednesday. "And my job is not done."

The job might get done Thursday night, when the Miami Heat ? up 3-1 in this title series ? host the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the finals. Even after leaving Game 4 late with a cramp, James is on the cusp of finally becoming a champ. He was swept in his first finals trip in 2007, then he and the Heat fell in the 2011 title series in six games.

After countless ups and downs, the 804th game of his career may be the one that ends his title quest.

"I have no idea what I'll say before we go out there," said James, who got treatment against Wednesday but said soreness that followed the cramps in his left leg was easing. "It kind of just comes to me when I'm getting ready to go out there and stand on the floor. But hopefully whatever I say will inspire our guys to go out and give a good show."

James joined the Heat in 2010 after Miami convinced him that he would have enough help to win a championship ? more specifically, that he wouldn't have to carry the load by himself, like he did so many times in Cleveland over his first seven seasons. The Heat were keeping Dwyane Wade, adding Chris Bosh and filling out the roster with a mix that would be best described as unconventional.

If that axiom ? more options are better ? actually needed to be proven, it was done in Game 4. James could not finish the game, though he returned after the first wave of cramps hit and delivered a key 3-pointer. With James watching the final minute, Wade and Mario Chalmers helped close out the Thunder, Miami winning 104-98 to move one win away from the franchise's second championship.

"This team, I think we understand that the moment is the biggest thing," Wade said. "We're excited about the possibility of playing better, doing things better defensively, but also offensively. We don't feel like we've played our best game yet, and we feel that's still to come."

The Thunder expect the same from themselves. At least, they hope that's the case.

No team in finals history has successfully rallied from a 3-1 series deficit, or even forced as much as a Game 7 when presented with that scenario since the league went to its current 2-3-2 finals format in 1985. But Oklahoma City's losses in this series ? in each of the last three games ? have come by four, six and six points, respectively.

A play here, a bounce there, this series might look a whole lot different. And that's why the Western Conference champions are conceding nothing.

"We didn't get here just to make it here and say we did," Thunder star Kevin Durant said. "We made it to the finals. We want to come in here and we want to try to get a title. It's all about keep competing until that last buzzer sounds, and that's what we're going to do. That's the type of city we play for, a city that never gives up. That's the type of team we are. We're going to keep fighting, keep fighting, and we'll see what happens tomorrow."

Russell Westbrook scored 43 points for the Thunder in Game 4 ? and they were for naught. It was the second time in these playoffs that someone had scored at least that many against the Heat. And like Boston's Rajon Rondo, who dropped 44 on Miami in the Eastern Conference finals, Westbrook walked off the court with a loss.

"I can't really be too happy about what I (did) because we didn't win," Westbrook said. "It doesn't matter. There's probably a lot of different guys that put up so many points or so many amount of rebounds, and nobody remembers it. The only thing that people remember is if you won the championship, and that's all that matters."

It might take more than leg cramps to keep James off the court for too long in Game 5.

He was his usual self in practice on Wednesday, laughing with teammates while shooting a few free throws, looking at ease. And most importantly to Miami, he was moving without too much pain.

James had to be carried off the court in the fourth quarter of Game 4, unable to walk to the bench. A lot of fluids and rest later, some of the bounce was back in his step on Wednesday.

I feel a lot better than I did last night. That's clear," James said. "I'm still a little (sore) because of the muscles just kind of being at an intense level, very tight. I'm still sore. It's a 9 p.m. tipoff, actually, but the point is made.

By Thursday night, James will be ready for the championship stage. And so will his team. What started on Christmas Day in Dallas, watching the Mavericks hoist the banner that will forever commemorate their championship celebration on Miami's home floor last year, could end as the perfect turnaround story for the Heat.

"You've got to absolutely immerse yourself into the process and the focus," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It's Game 5. We want to treat it as a Game 7. But we are preparing for Game 5 to protect our home court and to take care of that business. It's been well documented the experience we went through last year and the pain and all that. It doesn't guarantee anything. Experience is a great teacher. You know, hopefully all those experiences will help us."

James says they've already helped him.

He could not have seemed more relaxed on Wednesday. The chance he's waited nine years for comes on Thursday night, and James appeared totally comfortable in anticipation of that moment.

I've experienced some things in my long but short career, and I'm able to make it better of myself throughout these playoffs and throughout this whole year, and that's on and off the court," James said. "I'm just happy that I'm able to be in this position today and be back in this stage where I can do the things that I can do to make this team proud, make this organization proud, and we'll see what happens."

Mother of teen set afire speaks about 2009 attack

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Michael Brewer still suffers vivid nightmares from the attack by former middle school classmates who doused him with alcohol and set him on fire in 2009, his mother said in an interview Wednesday.

"He wakes up screaming, thinking that he is still on fire. And it takes a long time to get him calmed down and get him back to sleep," Valerie Brewer told The Associated Press.

Brewer, now 17, suffered severe burns over 65 percent of his body but survived after leaping into an apartment complex swimming pool. He spent months in the hospital, undergoing seven skin graft operations, followed by months of rehabilitation and physical therapy.

On Tuesday, jurors convicted 17-year-old Matthew "Zeke" Bent of aggravated battery for the attack that claimed national headlines. Bent is to be sentenced July 23. Conviction on the charge carries a maximum of 15 years in prison.

Valerie Brewer told The AP that her family had sought justice and felt that had been achieved.

"We were looking for justice for Michael and we got that," she said. But she added that her son will deal with the physical and mental scars for the rest of his life.

"He knows that this is what he's going to have to live with," Valerie Brewer said. "It's going to be an ongoing thing for him. He's not very comfortable looking in the mirror. The mental part of this, the mental scars that he has, are going to be the most difficult. That's never going to go away."

Michael Brewer testified at Bent's trial that he still feels pain in his back and legs but remembers little after diving into the pool to put out the flames.

"I started getting really cold, and then I started seeing blur," Michael Brewer had said at trial.

The alleged ringleader of the attack, Bent was convicted on a lesser charge of aggravated battery. He had originally been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Brewer and his family had been in court for much of the trial, but weren't present as the jury verdict was read Tuesday.

"The stress of the previous week, we needed some family time because he hadn't been sleeping, I hadn't been sleeping," Brewer's mother said. "And we were just emotionally and physically exhausted."

Valerie Brewer said the family obtained closure after Bent was convicted, stating: "Without the closure, Michael would not be able to move forward in his healing process."

She also said she believes the conviction sends a strong message that bullying won't be tolerated. "I hope this sends a message to everyone that if you bully someone?or hurt someone, directly or indirectly, they will be held responsible," she said.

At Bent's sentencing, prosecutors said they will seek the maximum penalty of 15 years, about half the time he could have faced when he was initially charged with attempted second-degree murder. Bent's lawyers said they plan to file an appeal, noting he already spent three years in jail awaiting trial.

"He thought that three years for his involvement was quite substantial," said defense attorney Perry Thurston Jr., speaking shortly after the verdict.

The other teens in the case had already been sentenced previously. Denver "D.C." Jarvis, 17, and Jesus Mendez, 18, pleaded no contest and were sentenced to eight and 11 years behind bars, respectively.

Thurston said the attack has changed all those involved.

"You're talking about 14- and 15-year-old boys. This is something that was horrific and went terribly wrong," Thurston said. "But this is just a back story of what goes horribly wrong with kids walking home from school. Ten minutes' time in the lives of all of these kids has changed their lives totally."

But a Brewer family attorney, Jeanne Brady, said the burned teen is mapping out his future and looking beyond the attack.

"Michael is such an inspirational young man. He has a resilience the likes of which I've really never seen in such a trauma victim," Brady told AP.

The teen is looking forward to attending college and graduating with a business degree. He later plans to move to California and open a skate shop. His mother said it has been a passion for him since before the attack and "that's what he wants to do."

"He's a handsome boy," Valerie Brewer said followed by a proud, motherly giggle as she talked about pictures of her son who recently attended his high school senior prom.

She added, "I am very blessed."
