Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

While it is possible to improve a home's energy efficiency in any climate, the predominant weather in an area has an impact on which efficiency measures will be the most valuable. For example, in especially cold areas such as Juneau or especially hot areas such as Phoenix replacement windows can cause a marked change in the cost of heating or cooling a house, whereas the impact of new windows in a more moderate climate will be less.

Any time you set out to improve your home's energy efficiency there are three dynamics to keep in mind. First, generating energy at your home from a clean source is far more efficient. Second, lighting your home more efficiently cuts down on energy consumption. Third, heating and cooling your home more efficiently is often the single most important area of overall efficiency.

The climate that you live in will, to a great degree, dictate your ability to generate power on your property. Those who live in a rainy climate, for example, won't benefit from solar panels the way that those who live in a sunny climate will. And it's pointless to install a windmill where there isn't any wind. But if you can generate power it's a good idea to do so: energy burns off in wires, so the shorter the distance is between production and plug the better.

One exception is a geothermal well, which generates power based on the exchange of heat between one end of a rod that is sunk deep into the ground and the other end of the rod, which is exposed. The temperature below the ground is fifty-six degrees Fahrenheit all the time, so any time the temperature above the ground is different (higher or lower) a geothermal well can generate electricity.

But producing power is only one way to increase efficiency. Reducing your home's consumption of power is just as important, and one of the most significant consumers of power is lighting. This can be changed by switching high efficiency light bulbs for the standard ones or by correcting bad habits. Simply turning the lights off when you leave a room can save a lot of electricity and substantially improve efficiency.

Beyond these simple fixes, it is possible to improve the way you light your home by making better use of natural light. In older homes that tend to have smaller windows, you can make a significant change by increasing the size and quantity of those windows. Even without structural changes, using mirrors to reflect (and reuse) natural light can greatly reduce your reliance on artificial lights powered by electricity.

Most people spend the most money on heating and cooling their homes, which means that heating and cooling use the most power. This can be mitigated by installing newer, more efficient equipment, as well as by improving the insulation of your home to bring it up to today's construction standards. The better insulated a home is, the less affected it is by the temperature outside.

In addition to re-insulating the home, replacing windows can demonstrably improve efficiency. The value of new windows has been well enough established that in hot places like Los Angeles and Phoenix replacement windows qualify for rebates from most utilities. Replacing the windows creates a good (and often subsidized) opportunity to expand the size of windows wherever possible, increasing the amount of natural light available inside the home.

In India, Anna Hazare again drawing crowds against corruption

Thousands are once again assembling around anti-graft campaigner Anna Hazare in New Delhi, setting up another major distraction for India's beleaguered government.

By Rebecca Byerly,?Correspondent / July 29, 2012

Veteran Indian social activist Anna Hazare cries while gesturing to his supporters on the first day of his fast against corruption in New Delhi July 29. Hazare began his fast on Sunday to demand a bill, the Lokpal, for creating an autonomous, powerful anti-corruption agency.

On Sunday, thousands of people across New Delhi showed their support for social activist Anna Hazare, as he starts an indefinite hunger strike against corruption until the government agrees to his demands for a stringent anti-graft bill known as the Jan Lokpal.

Mr. Hazare, whose 12-day fast in August last year forced the government to create a less-stringent Lokpal bill to set up a government ombudsman, told cheering crowds: "The politicians are servants and we people are the owners; but the picture today is that people have become the servant and the politicians are the owner. This movement is to awaken the people.?

As Hazare reassembles his street power, his movement threatens to dominate Indian media attention once again, forcing the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) onto defense again over corruption at a time when it desperately wants to pass investor-friendly reforms to reignite growth.

US based companies like Wal-Mart have been trying to enter India for years, but have been blocked by the UPA's failure to win looser restrictions on foreign direct investment for big box retail. Other potential investors like Indian steel magnate Laskshmi Mittal have said they have no immediate plans to invest in India, after recent attempts to build steel plants faced local opposition and push back over land acquisition. Efforts to reform land acquisition remain stuck in Parliament. ?

?Since the Anna Hazare movement started last April [2011] things have gone from bad to worse for the UPA government,? says Yashwant Deshmunk, a Delhi-based political analyst and elections expert. ?But the question is can this movement be channeled into an anti-Congress wave? By and large I don?t see opposition movement gaining ground.?

Adviser to the government, Satyanarayan Pitroda, says there is corruption but believes it?s the media?s coverage of events like the Hazare movement that trumps the progress actually being made by the current government.

?There is a lot of media coverage of the Hazare movement but the media hardly gives coverage to the more significant things happening in the country,? says Mr. Pitroda, who played a key role in India?s communication revolution. ?Even though the media will blow this out of proportion, it will not stop exports or slow legislation in India.?

Mr. Deshmunk agrees the Hazare movement is not likely to stop legislation but says the agitation will make people across India even more polarized to the political class.

?The depth of the movement cannot be seen by the number of people on TV,? says Deshmunk. ?The movement has moved from the middle class to the poor ??the message has been spread that the government has no plans to check corruption. It?s not going to be easy to set aside. This government has lost the mandate and trust of the people but this has not led to another opponent.?

Though Hazare has criticized both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the country's future does not lie safe in their hands, he has not offered another opponent. He says there?s a need for a political alternative in the 2014 elections, and will campaign for those with clean backgrounds selected by the people but has no plans to contest elections to form a party.

Pitroda is optimistic the country will continue moving forward and campaigns like Hazare?s is the challenge of a growing democracy.

?The elections are still a long way off,? says Pitroda. ?This is a democracy. The people will have to decide who is for real and who is not.?

Prescription Drug Warning Labels Often Overlooked By Seniors ...

A new study from Kansas State University and Michigan State University found that prescription drug warning labels are often ignored or overlooked by older adults. The researchers tracked eye movements to measure where different age groups concentrated their attention when given a bottle of prescription medication. According to the results, half of the participants over the age of 50 failed to notice the warning labels on the vial of medication they were given. By comparison, 90 percent of participants between the ages of 20 and 29 noticed the labels. The study highlights the need to make warning labels more noticeable in order to better capture patients? attention. There are nearly 15 million medication errors each year in the United States and, because seniors often have more complicated medication instructions to follow, it is important that warning labels are noticeable and effective. More here.

90% Bernie

Richard Linklater's "Bernie" is very enjoyable, and it's funny in a dark, unique way. Jack Black gives a wonderful performance as the title character, a mortician and funeral director who appears to have no gender and no sexuality. But ultimately the film doesn't have much to say. It's a good time, and it's worth seeing. But don't expect too much. The film is set in east Texas and is based on actual events. A very unique funeral director becomes the most beloved person in his town, surprisingly enough. When he commits a shocking murder, the town rallies around him, calling to mind "Dog Day Afternoon." The best thing by far, however, are the interviews with actual east Texans who knew the real Bernie. Somehow Linklater is able to get these people to express themselves on camera, using their wildly colorful local slang, and I howled out loud many times. But it's not a very strong statement about the film that the interviews are the best part.

Police struggle to identify Bulgaria suicide bomber

Bulgarian police along with the CIA, FBI and Interpol are struggling to identify a suicide bomber who killed six people, including five Israelis, as the United States said the attack bore the "hallmarks" of Hezbollah.

Investigators have released CCTV footage of the person they believe carried out Wednesday's attack at the airport of the Black Sea town of Burgas on a bus carrying Israeli holidaymakers, which also claimed the life of the Bulgarian driver.

After two days of investigations, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov was able only to confirm Friday that the bomber was not a Bulgarian citizen and had been in the country "not less than four days."

Fingerprints and DNA samples from the suspected bomber's body were being used in the effort to learn his identity, he added.

The minister also made public Friday evening some scanty details on the explosive used in the first attack of its kind in Bulgaria.

"We are speaking about trotile, about three kilogrammes (seven pounds). Analyses are continuing," he told state BNT television.

Trotile is made from Trinitrotoluene or TNT -- a common material in military bombs and also frequently used in attacks by militant groups.

Bulgaria's Pressa newspaper and the bTV channel said the bomber could have had an accomplice who detonated the explosives by cellphone.

A man and his wife who ran a car rental service said they recognised the suspect who came to hire a vehicle. They said he had a wad of 500-euro bills and refused to rent him a car as his US driving licence appeared to be a fake.

Bourgas prosecutor Kalina Tchapkanova quoted witnesses as saying the man "spoke English with a slight accent" and appeared to be Arab.

The car rental service owner's wife Afrodita Petrova said she was sure he was of Arab origin and had a shaved head.

The only document found on the bomber was a fake Michigan driving licence in the name of Jacque Felipe Martin with an address in Baton Rouge in Louisiana.

Michigan is known to issue licences only to state residents.

Israel and Bulgaria meanwhile held emotional funerals for the victims -- Israelis Kochava Shriki, 44, who was pregnant, Yitzhik Kolengi, Amir Menashe, Elior Priess and Maor Harush, all in their 20s, and the Bulgarian driver of the bus Mustafa Kyosov, 36.

More than 30 people were also injured in the blast, three of them seriously, all of whom have since been repatriated, as have around 60 others who escaped injury. Some opted to continue their holiday in the Black Sea resorts popular with Israelis.

US President Barack Obama pledged solidarity with Bulgaria over the "barbaric attack," echoing indignation from around the world.

In a telephone call with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Obama "offered his support for the ongoing investigation, and for the Bulgarian people in this challenging time," the White House said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Obama had phoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to offer his condolences and support.

Israel has blamed Iran and Tehran's "terrorist proxy" Hezbollah, saying it fitted a pattern of other recent attacks or attempted attacks on Israelis including in Thailand, India, Georgia, Kenya and Cyprus.

The Islamic Republic, already under pressure over growing international tensions over its nuclear programme, rejected Israel's accusations as "ridiculous."

"The attack does bear some of the hallmarks of Hezbollah, but we're not in a position to make any final determination on who was responsible," Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters on Friday.

Airport video footage of the presumed suicide bomber released by Bulgarian authorities showed an apparently white male with long hair, possibly a wig, dressed in typical holiday gear -- shorts, a baseball cap, sneakers -- and carrying a backpack and a laptop bag.

Tsvetanov said the man, who was shown wandering around the airport, looked around 36.

Interpol has sent an "incident response team" to Bulgaria including two "terrorism" experts from Switzerland and France and a US explosives specialist. European police agency Europol was also assisting.

The explosion ripped through the bus as around 50 Israeli tourists arriving from Tel Aviv were loading their bags before travelling to nearby holiday and gambling resort Sunny Beach.

The bomber struck on the 18th anniversary of an attack on a Jewish community centre in Argentina that killed 85 people.

(AP Photo/Louis Lanzano, File)

(AP) ? Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has resigned as a director of a number of News Corp. subsidiary boards in Britain and the United States, a spokeswoman confirmed Saturday.

Murdoch stepped down this past week as a director of NI Group, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp. Investments in the U.K., said Daisy Dunlop, spokeswoman for News Corp.'s British arm, News International. The companies oversee Britain's newspapers The Sun, The Times, and The Sunday Times.

It was not immediately clear which of News Corp.'s U.S. boards Murdoch had left. Britain's Telegraph newspaper, which first reported the news late Saturday, said those details had not yet been disclosed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

News International sought to play down the significance of the resignations, saying in a statement that "this is nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split."

That was a reference to News Corp.'s announcement June 28 that it would separate its publishing business from its much more profitable media and entertainment business ? forming two distinct, publicly traded companies. Under those proposed changes, Murdoch, 81, will chair both of the companies, although he would continue as chief executive of the media and entertainment company only.

Saturday's announcement suggests that Murdoch may be distancing himself from his British newspaper interests, which have been shaken to the core by a widespread phone hacking scandal.

The scandal erupted anew last year when it emerged that Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid had systematically hacked voicemails of politicians and celebrities. The revelations have rocked Britain's establishment and triggered three parallel police investigations that have resulted in more than 40 arrests.

Illegal eavesdropping allegations at the News of the World led to the resignation of Rebekah Brooks, then-CEO of News International, who has been accused of perverting justice in the scandal.

Italy ratifies EU treaty to battle debt crisis

ROME: Italy's parliament on Thursday ratified the European fiscal pact, which imposes strict budget discipline on its signatories in a bid to resolve the eurozone debt crisis.

The treaty, which will take effect on January 1, 2013 as long as it is ratified by at least 12 European Union member states, was approved with 380 votes in favour, 59 against and 36 abstentions.

Only the populist Northern League party, which was in a coalition government under Silvio Berlusconi until November last year, voted against while the centre-left Italy of Values party abstained.

At an earlier vote on the treaty, Northern League senators had held up a banner reading: "Yes to a Europe of peoples, No to a Europe of banks."

The treaty was approved by all EU leaders minus Britain and the Czech Republic.

The pact aims to enforce stricter budgetary rules in the bloc and prevent the high public deficits that touched off the eurozone turmoil.

Panasonic's new cameras aim for ambitious amateurs

16 hrs.

Panasonic has released a few new cameras generally focused on the high-end consumer market, with capabilities aimed at serious amateur photographers. Budget-minded shooters should look elsewhere, but others may find the new gear very compelling.

Their mirrorless lineup has been updated with the G5?model, a modest but significant improvement over the popular G3. It has a new 16-megapixel sensor that will shoot at up to 12,800 ISO, and Panasonic?claims?low-light performance has been improved generally as well.

The rear articulating touchscreen has twice as many pixels as before, going from 480x320 to 640x480, though the electronic viewfinder?appears to be unchanged.

It'll shoot six frames per second and takes 1080p video at a fairly high bitrate, putting it on a level with nicer camcorders and DSLRs. Panasonic also says the autofocus is among the world's fastest, acquiring a subject in less than a tenth of a second.

Next is the luxury point-and-shoot, the LX7. It packs some serious glass: an F/1.4-2.3 3.8x zoom, meaning low-light shots should be a snap, even if you zoom in. It's probably the fastest lens in a compact camera today.

The LX7 also has improved autofocus and video capabilities, the result of a new 10-megapixel sensor. That?may not sound like a lot these days, but when the image quality is good, you don't often?need more.

Some fun photographer features: a built-in neutral density filter (allowing you to take advantage of that fast lens in more conditions), a time-lapse mode (always fun to play with), and an impressive 11 frames per second rate in burst shooting. Leica usually puts out a modified one of these shortly afterward with a higher price tag, which gives you a general indication of the quality.

The FZ200 is Panasonic's?new super-zoom. Prized by parents and travelers, this type of camera isn't usually impressive enough to take attention away from cooler cameras, but this one is an exception. The reason is its insane lens: a 24x zoom with a constant F/2.8 aperture. I actually thought this was a mistake when the company mentioned it. Combined with an improved 12-megapixel sensor like that on the others in the new lineup, this camera really blows away the super-zoom competition.

It has a new high-resolution EVF, though the rear LCD isn't worth writing home about. It can record video at up to 240 frames per second, which is fantastic for slowing down action ? and with that lens, getting enough light for that kind of shot won't even be that difficult.

None of these cameras has official pricing yet, but you can be sure they will all fall toward?the high end of their respective markets. The G5 will compete with DSLRs at around the $800 level, the LX7 around the $500 range, and the FZ200 for a bit more. The pricing and availability will be announced a month before they become available ??perhaps late summer/early fall?? so interested buyers will have plenty of time to consider.

Five Online Safety Tips from Security Pros | CIO Blogs

The Australian government compiled a standard list of 10?things you can do to protect personal information online, but?sometimes these basics aren't enough. So I asked some IT security professonals for insight on what steps they take when shopping online or when registering with a new website. Here a list of online safety tips from five IT security pros.

?

Patrick Harding, chief technical officer, Ping Identity:

  • It's counter-intuitive, but in my consumer role I prefer to use my Facebook or Google identity whenever possible. First, it's convenient. Second, popular social media has better security practices than I do as a consumer so my Google identity is better evidence to the vendor that I am really doing the shopping than the various and probably weak passwords I might otherwise lose, forget, or have stolen.?Third, a shopping site vendor who has my credit card information is maybe even more likely to be successfully breached than Google which offers two-factor authentication 1, requiring the bad guys to have my password and my mobile phone to steal my identity.

Darien Kindlund, senior staff scientist, FireEye:

  • Navigate the shopping website using a separate, isolated browser ideally on a separate system or inside a?separate virtual machine. Try to use unique passwords when registering with a new site. That way, if (or when) the website is hacked, attackers can?t reuse your login credentials to access your other accounts on other websites.

Marc Gaffan, co-founder and VP of marketing & business development, Incapsula:

  • I never give out my mother's maiden name to ANYONE. It's worse than giving away your online banking's password because it's one of the things that are used to reset and retrieve such passwords.
  • If I don?t know them, I don?t connect with them.? People who can see your profile and interactions on social networks can find out a lot about you (If your mom happens to be your friend and her brother is friends with her ? there goes your mother's maiden name.)
  • Believe it or not, using a post-it to write down your password is probably much safer than keeping it in some file on your personal computer (which probably has the word password in the file's name.)

Shuman Ghosemajumder, vice president of marketing, Shape Security

  • I make sure I can trust the site with my data by asking these questions:
  1. Have I heard of the company before?
  2. Did I specifically navigate to their site (as opposed to discovering it through surfing)?
  3. Is the URL correct?(to ensure?I?haven't been tricked into visiting a malicious site)?
  • Avoid sites?that don't use SSL/TLS 2?for registration or login. If I'm on an open WiFi connection, I never submit user details to a URL?that doesn't?begin with HTTPS://. Submitting information insecurely (e.g., via an open WiFi connection) makes it easy to steal.
  • When I create an account, I don't use the same password I use on other websites such as Gmail or for my bank. Credential harvesting attacks take leaked passwords from one site and then probe other sites for use of the same password.

Nimmy Reichenberg, vice president of marketing and business development, AlgoSec:

  • I only shop online through ?trusted? sites such as Amazon.com or physical stores that have an online presence such as Target, etc. I limit the amount of information I?m willing to provide. For example, I do not typically store my credit card information and never provide banking information. When registering with a site/newsletter, I provide as little information as possible. Hackers are always looking for useful information which by itself may be nothing overly interesting, but which could be used to gain unauthorized access to other accounts.

1 ?You can get this via the Google Authenticator app. Authenticator provides a six-digit number users must provide in addition to their usernames and passwords to log in to Google services. The Authenticator can also generate codes for third-party applications. It can be a pain to use sometimes, but it's much less?painful than having your identity stolen.

2?These are Internet security protocols used by Internet browsers and Web servers to transmit sensitive information. In your browser, you can tell when you are using a secure protocol, such as TLS, in a couple of different ways. You will notice that the "http" in the address line is replaced with "https," and you should see a small padlock in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window.

UK judge forces Apple to state on its site that Samsung didn't copy the iPad

Apple is being forced by a British judge to tacitly state that Samsung didn't copy its iPad design. According to Bloomberg, Judge Colin Birss said that Apple has to post a notice both on its website and several British newspapers and magazines, to help correct the "damaging impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple's product." The online part will reportedly stay there for six months. Apple lost its case against Samsung in the UK earlier this month, with the same judge awkwardly branding the 10-inch Android tablet "not as cool" as the iPad.

Shares rise as investors hope for further stimulus

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares surged and the euro recovered on Tuesday as investors covered short positions and hunted for bargains while awaiting U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's view on the U.S. economy expected later in the day.

European stocks were likely to rise, tracking Asia and a 0.5 percent increase in U.S. stock futures that pointed to a stronger start in Wall Street. Financial spreadbetters called the main indexes in London, Paris and Frankfurt to open up as much as 0.6 percent.

Weak U.S. retail sales and a lower International Monetary Fund global growth forecast on Monday raised hopes of more monetary stimulus from the Fed, as Bernanke was set to give his semi-annual Congressional testimony on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He is expected to reiterate the bank's stance that it will take further action only if economic conditions worsen.

"For global shares to rise, investors will probably need more stimulus and an improvement in economic sentiment," said Shun Maruyama, chief strategist at BNP Paribas.

Some traders cited the Reserve Bank of Australia's minutes as spurring further buying in riskier assets, as they suggested the central bank may be spared for now from having to cut rates further to support growth.

"The minutes suggested a slightly hawkish tone, pushing back expectations for more rate cuts in the near-term, which eased concerns about growth in developed countries and underpinned market prices," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole Bank in Tokyo.

Australia's central bank saw "no need" to cut interest rates at its July meeting because a material easing had already been delivered and data showed the domestic economy had more momentum than first thought.

The Australian dollar hit a session high near $1.0300 after the minutes, up from $1.0248 late on Monday.

Traders also said short covering in the euro -- when players buy back the currency to realise gains on an earlier bet it would fall -- gained further momentum after the minutes.

The dollar found support against the yen after Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi said he was prepared to take firm measures on currencies when needed, a hint that Tokyo could intervene in the market, as a firm yen would hurt Japan's economy.

HONG KONG SHARES RALLY

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan climbed 1.3 percent for a third straight day of gains, with Chinese equities leading their peers.

Hong Kong shares rallied 1.8 percent on a mix of factors including strong performance in Chinese insurers due to solid premium growth in June, rising rail stocks on expectations for more government investment, as well as stop losses triggered on Hang Seng index futures contracts at the 19,200 level.

Australian shares rose 1 percent as investors moved into stocks with strong dividend yields while South Korean shares gained 0.8 percent on programme arbitrage trading.

Japan's Nikkei stock average added 0.8 percent after a public holiday on Monday.

Weakness in U.S. retail sales in June fuelled investor concerns as the retail sector drives about two-thirds of the U.S. economy.

The pressure on the United States may get stronger after the IMF, along with cutting global growth forecast, warned of a dimming outlook if European policymakers do not act forcibly and promptly to quell their region's debt crisis.

"Absent recession, the dominant market driver will still be U.S. policy and cheap money," said Kit Juckes, currency strategist at Societe Generale.

The weak U.S. retail sales data pushed the 10-year Treasury yield down to 1.442 percent on Monday, matching the record low hit on June 1, while the dollar fell to a one-month low of 78.69 yen. The dollar was at 78.92 yen on Tuesday.

The nominal effective exchange rate for the dollar/yen now is around the same as late October when Japan intervened to prop up the dollar, said Hideki Amikura, forex manager at Nomura Trust Bank. "Azumi's comments today must reflect his wariness that Bernanke's comments this week could further pressure the dollar lower," Amikura said.

Oil steadied from earlier losses, with Brent crude up 0.1 percent at $103.49 a barrel and U.S. crude inching up 0.1 percent at $88.54 a barrel.

Uncertainty over the future of the euro zone's permanent bailout fund deepened on Monday when Germany's Constitutional Court said it would not rule until September 12 on whether the European Stability Mechanism, and planned changes to the region's budget rules, are compatible with German law.

The delay in mobilizing bailout funds for troubled euro zone states could risk pushing borrowing costs in vulnerable economies such as Spain and Italy beyond sustainable levels.

The euro stood at $1.2292 on Tuesday, off its two-year low of $1.2162 hit on Friday, and at 97 against the yen, above a six-week low of 96.17 yen touched on Monday.

Asian credit markets remained wary of bearish global growth prospects, widening the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 4 basis points.

Microsoft Office 2013: 10 Best Features

Microsoft through the years has earned a reputation for being stodgy and dull, but deep down inside, Redmond's a gambler. How else can you explain the company's decision to essentially bet the farm on Windows 8--a radical redesign of the world's dominant desktop computer operating system--to create a one-size-fits-all user interface for PCs, tablets, and phones? The new Office 2013, the latest version of Microsoft's (again dominant) productivity suite, is part of that risky strategy.

Office 2013, which won't ship until sometime next year, at unannounced prices, isn't as bold a departure from its predecessor as Windows 8 compared to Windows 7. The familiar Office Ribbon--love it or hate it--is still the primary means of navigation in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office programs. But the Ribbon has adopted a flatter, no-nonsense look inspired by Windows 8's Metro apps. And many of Office 2013's innovations are geared towards multi-touch tablets, including finger and stylus controls that may help spur Office's migration to mobile devices, where Microsoft is just another also-ran behind dominant players Apple (iOS) and Google (Android).

Here's another decidedly mobile move: Office Home and Student 2013 RT, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, will come with ARM-based Windows 8 devices, including the recently announced Microsoft Surface slate.

Despite the mobile focus, there's plenty of cool stuff in Office 2013 for desktop users. Topping the list is the tight integration of Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud service, which saves Office files online and syncs them across multiple digital devices. For business users there's Office's new integration with recently acquired Microsoft properties, including Skype and the Yammer social network. And Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote have a few several compelling enhancements too, although not enough to warrant an upgrade on their own.

So what's Microsoft's game plan with Office 2013? To battle the consumerization of IT, writes Forrester analyst Rob Koplowitz in a Monday blog post:

"For a long time Microsoft ruled the knowledge worker part of the IT seas with impunity. They have fended off attacks from the expected folks like IBM and Oracle rather handily. Then the consumerization wave hit. Turns out the danger came not from a frontal assault from another battleship, but from a huge array of small pirates. Knowledge worker eyeballs that always belonged to Microsoft strayed to Evernote, Dropbox, Box, Jive, Yammer, Google Apps, Confluence, you name it."

Is Office 2013 the right productivity suite for an increasingly mobile workforce? Click through the slideshow and draw your own opinions.

IT Outsourcing | What To Look For From Quality Web Outsourcing ...

If you are feeling overwhelmed with the work that is piling up from your small business, no doubt you are looking web outsourcing as one of the smart alternatives available to assist you. Why is it such a smart alternative? Consider hiring an in house employee to update your documents regularly and optimize your business site. This could cost an increase of $10 per hour that they work, which can increase your payroll dollars well beyond your comfort level. However, when you choose outsourcing assistance you can actually save up to 50% off of what it would cost to hire an in house professional employee. All business owners understand that in this difficult economy it is necessary to conserve money whenever possible, and outsourcing is a great way to save money, save time and still get impeccable quality. Who knows you may even get better quality than any in house employee you would otherwise hire.

Being Smart About Picking an Outsourcing Company

While you might be rather excited to forge a business relationship with an outsourcing company, don?t jump into things too quickly. The Internet is still filled with plenty of scammers and people claiming to run trusting businesses that are just good salesmen. You have to be smart when picking a web outsourcing company if you want to truly benefit from their services and from your newfound time. Take note of the following tips whenever you are searching for an outsourcing company or professional:

  • Be wary of a company or professional that does not have any experience or references. If you plan on working with one of these professionals ask for samples if applicable.
  • Be wary of companies who seek upfront payments, as all too often they will take the money and run!
  • Be sure that you set the guidelines for your project. While a professional will offer suggestions, it is your business and you are still the employer!
  • Be sure that the professional who is working on your project is a native English speaker. If you are comfortable with a non-native English speaker your rates should reflect this.
  • Agree that you will not pay for work that is subpar, however you can explain that if the professional is willing to revise till correct then payment can be rendered.
  • Set firm deadlines.
  • Don?t settle for rates that are outside of your budget, otherwise you are defeating the purpose of outsourcing altogether.

Only Settle for the Best!

Just keep in mind that you need a web outsourcing company who specializes in bringing quality, knowledgeable and professional specialists to small business professionals just like you. Not only one whose professionals are native English speakers, but those who also have extensive experience in writing articles, optimizing social media pages or developing spreadsheets for a number of projects. All work that is submitted for your business should be reviewed for quality by a supervisory staff to ensure that your final product is delivered on time and meets each and every one of your requirements. While you might be thinking that for quality work you are going to have to pay more, there are some web outsourcing companies whose goal is to always provide you with outsourcing capabilities that are within your budget, so that you can put your hard earned money back into your business, where it belongs!

Solar storm sparks earthly light show

Brad Goldpaint / Copyright 2012 Goldpaint Photography

Photographer Brad Goldpaint snapped multiple frames of the northern lights on July 15. "I had an incredible experience last night capturing the aurora borealis over Sparks Lake in Central Oregon," he said in an email sent on Sunday. For more of his work, check out the Goldpaint Photography website.

By Alan Boyle

The solar storm that swept past Earth over the weekend didn't disrupt any power grids, but it did turn on the auroral lights for skywatchers over a wide swath of North America, extending at least as far down as Arkansas.

SpaceWeather.com cataloged stunning photos from the usual places in northern climes, including Canadian provinces as well as the northern tier of the United States. But this particular solar storm ??sparked by last Thursday's big coronal mass ejection, or CME ??didn't stop there. Photographers sent in pictures from Arkansas as well as Ohio, Nebraska, Utah, California and other locales well south of the usual places.?There were auroral images as well from Scotland, Hungary, and yes, from New Zealand, Tasmania and the South Pole at the other end of the world.

Observers knew they were in for something big, due to the fact that the flare associated with the solar eruption reached an extreme level of X1.4 on the classification scale?for solar outbursts. The radio blast from a sunspot region known as AR 1520 resulted in a strong radio blackout for some high-frequency communication systems, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Extreme solar storms have been known to knock out electrical grids as well as satellites, but this one apparently had no ill effects. Today, the prediction center said the stormy space weather "is finally showing signs of weakening."

"No further significant activity has occurred, and while Region 1520 has become less of a threat, it still has the potential for further activity," the center reported.

The sun is heading toward the high point of its 11-year activity cycle, with the maximum expected next year. That means this weekend's storm could just be a foretaste of what's ahead for aurora-watchers and space weather forecasters over the coming months. In the meantime, check out this gallery featuring the latest pictures from the world's greatest light show:

Photographer Brian Emfinger captured this time-lapse video view of the auroral display over Ozark, Ark., on July 15. "There was a very faint red glow off and on most of the night, but around 2 a.m. CDT it began increasing.
