Tonight, two of the top offensive minds in college football?Oregon head coach Chip Kelly and Washington State head coach Mike Leach?will square off when their teams meet at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two offensive masterminds.
There are a lot of notable offensive minds in the college game, such as Dana Holgorsen, Urban Meyer and Rich Rodriguez. Nevertheless, any time you start having a conversation about the offensive geniuses in the game today, it?s simply a must that both Kelly and Leach be included.
The impact they?ve had on college football is clearly undeniable.
In recent years, the two coaches have been responsible for leading some of the most exciting and explosive offenses in the country. ?
During his tenure at Texas Tech, Leach used his Air Raid offensive system to overwhelm defenses with a pass-heavy attack, which was led by some of the most productive passers in history such as Graham Harrell, B.J. Symons and KliffKingsbury.
Kelly has used a different, yet still equally effective method, during his time at Oregon, implementing a spread option-read offense that gets the most out of speedy and athletic skill-position players.
In each of the past three seasons, the Ducks have ranked in the Top 10 nationally in scoring, averaging 43 points per game during that time. The explosive and unstoppable offense has been the main reason that Oregon has won three straight Pac-12 championships and made three straight appearances in BCS bowl games.
It?s a system which helped RB LaMichael James make a serious run at the Heisman Trophy back in 2010, and it?s one that has made RB De?Anthony Thomas a national star before he?s even finished his sophomore season.
Many of Leach's and Kelly?s innovative schemes and plays have been copied and adapted by other college offensive coordinators, as well as thousands of high school coaches around the country.
Some of Leach?s former assistants, such as West Virginia?s Dana Holgorsen, Baylor?s Art Briles and Louisiana Tech?s Sonny Dykes, have gone on to find great success as head coaches.
Holgorsen, Briles and Dykes currently lead some of the most productive offensive attacks in college football at their respective schools.
Kelly may not have the coaching tree that Leach does, but it?s only a matter of time before he starts sending off assistants to big-name jobs. Keep an eye on current coordinator Mark Helfrich, who is sure to be one of the hottest potential head coaching names during the offseason.
While neither Leach nor Kelly has a national championship on his resume, it?s easy to see the type of impact they?ve had on the game with their revolutionary offensive philosophies.
Admittedly, neither coach is a true innovator or pioneer, but they?ve definitely added their own unique touches to offensive football at the college level.
Leach honed his skills under his mentor Hal Mumme at Kentucky in the late nineties, and then managed to take the Air Raid system to new heights during his time at Texas Tech.
Kelly may not have been the first to use the shotgun zone-read concept, but he?s added some very interesting concepts and packages to the offensive system (The wishbone formation from the BCS Championship Game against Auburn is my personal favorite). Every year, he seems to add something new that takes defenses by surprise.
Seeing as this is Leach?s first year at Washington State, and he?s still got some serious rebuilding to do, it?s hard to expect the Cougars to hang with the Ducks tonight. However, if these two coaches stay in the same spots for the foreseeable future, we could surely see some wild offensive shootouts between these two teams in the years to come.
BAGHDAD - Bombs striking Shiite neighbourhoods, security forces and other targets across Iraq killed at least 26 people Sunday, officials said. It was the latest instance in which insurgents launched co-ordinate attacks in multiple cities across the country in a single day, apparently intending to rekindle widespread sectarian conflict and undermine public confidence in the beleaguered government.
The deadliest attack came in the town of Taji, a former al-Qaida stronghold just north of Baghdad, where three explosive-rigged cars went off within minutes of each other. Police said eight people died and 28 were injured in the back-to-back blasts that began around 7:15 a.m.
In all, at least 94 people were wounded in the wave of attacks that stretched from the restive but oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq's north to the southern Shiite town of Kut.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the violence, but car bombs are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq. The Sunni militant network has vowed to take back areas of the country, like Taji, from which it was pushed before U.S. troops withdrew last December.
Shortly after the Taji attacks, police said a suicide bomber set off his explosives-packed car in the Shiite neighbourhood of Shula in northwest Baghdad. One person was killed and seven wounded. Police could not immediately identify the target.
"So many people were hurt. A leg of a person was amputated," lamented Shula resident Naeem Frieh. "What have those innocent people done to deserve this?"
And in Baghdad's bustling Karrada neighbourhood, a parked car laden with explosives went off next to a police patrol, killing a police officer and a civilian, other officials said. Eight other people were injured. The blast was followed minutes later by another parked car bomb as people gathered, killing three civilians and injuring 12 others, they added. Secondary bomb blasts targeting those coming to help the wounded are a common insurgent tactic.
Elsewhere in the country, another suicide bomber drove a minibus into a security checkpoint in Kut, located 160 kilometres (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad. Three police officers were killed and five wounded, Maj. Gen. Hussein Abdul-Hadi Mahbob said.
And in Iraq's north, another policeman was killed when security forces were trying to defuse a car bomb parked on the main highway between the cities of Kirkuk and Tuz Khormato, said Kirkuk police chief Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir. A second policeman was wounded in the blast, Qadir said. Kirkuk is about 290 kilometres (180 miles) north of Baghdad.
In mid-morning, another parked car bomb went off next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in the town of Madain, killing three Iraqis and injuring 11 others included seven Iranians, another police officer and health official said. Madain is a mainly Sunni area located 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Baghdad.
In the town of Balad Ruz, 75 kilometres (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a parked car bomb targeted a passing police patrol, killing two policemen and injuring seven others, a police officer and health official said. And in the nearby town of Khan Bani Saad, 15 kilometres (nine miles) northeast of Baghdad, yet another parked car bomb exploded near a market and killed one civilian and injured nine others, they added.
Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Baghdad, when their patrol hit a roadside bomb, another police officer and health official said. Six other people, including four civilians were wounded.
Health officials in Taji, Tarmiyah and Baghdad confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.
Violence has dropped since the height of Iraq's bloodshed a few years ago, but Iraqi forces have failed to stop the attacks that continue to claim lives almost daily.
Senior central government officials were not available for comment.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
Pet owners are using social media to post funny pictures of their dogs confessing their mistakes. It's called "dog shaming" and it's a viral trend that's making some people howl.
Dirty dogs are coming clean online, on sites like dog-shaming.com. While owners posting the?pictures of their pups may get laughs,?the dogs aren't really ashamed.
"Not one bit," said Sarah Babcock of the Richmond SPCA.?"I suspect there's an awful lot of dog treats doled out trying to get them to hold the sings for the photographers."
Babcock believes the trend is cute and harmless, but also says instead of just shaming, you can also teach your dogs to correct their behavior.
"I think, 'Wow! So many of these animals could be helped if the people really knew where to go for resources and could get the help they need," she said.
The Richmond?SPCA points out that it has a behavior help line and classes available, in case you want to do more than just shame your pet next time it makes a mess on the kitchen floor.

Voters cast their ballot in a recall election June 5, 2012 in Lake Mills, Wis. Get-out-the-vote volunteers tried different tactics to improve voter turnout in the state.
Five days before the failed vote to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Rob ?Biko? Baker sat behind the wheel of his Ford Fusion in a working-class neighborhood of Milwaukee?s West Side and watched two of his college-age volunteers knock on doors. They were doing what canvassers for the League of Young Voters, the group Baker serves as executive director, often do before an election: reminding urban, working-class black voters of an upcoming vote and exhorting them to participate.
?Official records show that you are registered to vote. We?re visiting voters like you who care about our community to remind you about the special recall election on June 5!? the canvassers began, after asking to speak with a specific member of the household.? ?It looks like a lot of people will be voting this year in the special recall election, and we hope our community turns out, too!?
Only this time there was something new in the scripts that Baker?s canvassers had affixed to their clipboards. ?Check this out,? they read. ?Have you heard that they?re trying to take away our right to vote?? The canvasser was then supposed to go on and explain what had happened that year in Wisconsin: A law had been passed to require voters to present ID, but a court had intervened to halt its implementation. ?Our power to change laws is directly tied to voting. Imagine if you didn?t have the right to vote,? the script read, before delivering some stage directions: GIVE PERSONAL STORY.
Baker looked out on the scene. ?After 2010, we?ve been on the defensive so much about voter ID,? said the 34-year old Milwaukee native, a former hip-hop promoter who did social media for Snoop Dogg before starting work on a doctorate in history. Founded in 2003 as part of a Bush-era renaissance in liberal organizing, the League of Young Voters had shifted its emphasis to mobilizing specifically urban minorities in six states, relying on the efforts of mostly young, black volunteers. It was a task Baker thought had taken on an unanticipated urgency with the spate of new state laws requiring that citizens present ID cards to vote. ?When I left school I didn?t think my job would be convincing people to get drivers? licenses,? he said.??That?s not why I left graduate school.?
Baker was nonetheless approaching the voter ID question in a rather scholarly way. When it looked as though the Wisconsin law would be enforced in 2012, he wondered if it might present a new opportunity for his group: Could raising hackles over the law?s perceived injustice help to mobilize infrequent voters who might otherwise feel they don?t have a stake in election outcomes? Baker sought out partners to help him design a field experiment that could be administered in the June recall to yield lessons for November. The League of Young Voters ended up partnering with two leaders of Washington?s lefty empirical-electioneering establishment: the New Organizing Institute and the Analyst Institute, which specializes in randomized-control trials to measure the impact of campaign activity. ?I?m like a backyard mechanic who?s got a little bit of schooling,? says Baker, ?but I?m not a political scientist.?
The New Organizing Institute helped create walk lists that included only targets who had been identified by voter data as likely to be African-American, a group the league believed would be the most outraged by new voting laws. The Analyst Institute oversaw the process of randomly assigning Milwaukee?s 318 wards to three separate groups: 104 would get a standard get-out-the-vote canvass, 104 would get scripts with the additional language about voting rights and ID laws, and 104 would be in a control group that was ignored altogether by the league?s canvassers.
The streets of Wisconsin were a muddle that weekend, with canvassers from established institutions (like unions and Democratic Party organizations) mixing with those from pop-up groups founded solely to battle Walker; all were boosted by the arrival of out-of-state volunteers. The experimental design couldn?t control for the activities of these other groups, so the best Baker could do was to train his two dozen paid staffers and their teams of often teenage volunteers to stick closely to their instructions when they headed out in to knock on doors.
Over the summer, it became clear that presenting IDs wouldn?t be a concern to Wisconsin that fall, but that it would be in other states that mattered a lot to Democratic fortunes, like Pennsylvania. As Baker waited for the results of his field experiment to be tabulated, a growing constellation of liberal operatives, strategists, and donors had already reached the conclusion that the new issue would permit them to go on offense, mobilizing the most disaffected corners of their coalition.
?It?s going to be an amazing get-out-the-vote effort for us because there will be stories about people being denied the vote,? John Anzalone, one of Obama?s pollsters, said of voter ID laws at a panel discussion hosted by National Journal during the Democratic Convention in Charlotte. ?This has the ability to really piss a lot of people off.?
By then, the numbers had come in from Milwaukee, and the Washington institutions that had taken on responsibility for the analysis had begun circulating draft memos and PowerPoint presentations. At first glance, the voter ID script appeared to have had an impact: 29.9 percent of Milwaukeeans assigned to hear it turned out to vote in the recall, compared to the control group?s rate of 28.8 percent. But the residents who received a standard get-out-the-vote message from league canvassers voted at a 30.7 percent rate. In other words, the voter ID script actually did worse than the traditional mobilization method, although not in a way the Analyst Institute assessed as statistically significant. ?We cannot conclude that Voter ID messaging dampened turnout, but we also can?t conclude that it increased turnout,? an institute memo read.
Both Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in Ohio on Wednesday. With Obama gaining more and more of an edge in the polls, Romney tried to appeal to voters, telling them he cares about all Americans.

Slipping in states that could sink his presidential bid, Republican Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that "I care about the people of America" and can do more than President Barack Obama to improve their lives. In an all-day Ohio duel, Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation "victims" was unlikely to be of much help.
Click Here for your FREE 30 DAYS of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly Digital Edition
Romney's approach reflected what he is up against: a widening Obama lead in polls in key states such as Ohio, the backlash from a leaked video in which he disparages Obama supporters as government-dependent people who see themselves as victims, and a campaign imperative to make his policy plans more plain.
With under six weeks to go, and just one week before the first big debate, Obama's campaign reveled in the latest public polling ? but tried to crush any sense of overconfidence. "If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," said campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
The day's setting was Ohio, where Obama's momentum has seemed to be growing. It's also a state no Republican has won the White House without carrying.
Romney, eager to project confidence and brush aside suggestions that he was faltering, went after working-class voters outside Columbus and Cleveland before rolling to Toledo. Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green State University and Kent State University, reminding Ohioans their state allows them to start cast ballots next week. Early voting has already begun in more than two dozen other states.
For Romney, in his appearances and in a new TV ad in which he appeals straight to the camera, it was time for plain talk to contrast himself with Obama, and to mince no words about his expectations.
"There are so many people in our country who are hurting right now. I want to help them. I know what it takes," Romney told the crowd in Westerville. "I care about the people of America, and the difference between me and Barack Obama is I know what to do."
That message so late in the campaign ? a presidential nominee declaring his concern for all the people of the country ? was part of his widening effort to rebound from his caught-on-video comments at a fundraiser.
In those comments, made last May but only recently revealed, Romney said "47 percent of the people" pay no federal income tax, will vote for Obama no matter what, see themselves as victims, think the government must care for them and do not "take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Police identified on Friday the disgruntled former employee who killed five people and took his own life in a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company from which he had been fired.
Hours after losing his job on Thursday, the 36-year-old gunman, Andrew Engeldinger, entered Accent Signage Systems Inc. through a loading dock door with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and began firing, police said. Some of his victims were likely targeted.
Engeldinger was found dead by officers in the basement of the building with a single shell casing next to him, Police Chief Tim Dolan told a news conference. It was the state's worst workplace killing in at least two decades.
"It is clear that he did walk by some people, very clear, especially when he went in the office area. He did walk by people to get to certain other members of the business," Dolan said.
He said police officers searching the building some time later found two people hiding from the gunman.
At Engeldinger's house, police turned up a second gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition, Dolan said. He was believed to have acquired the handguns legally last year.
Dolan declined to say why Engeldinger was fired or what his job had been at the company, the only manufacturing business located among the mix of single-family homes and parks in the tree-lined section of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Before taking his own life, Engeldinger shot dead four people at the office building. A fifth victim, 62-year-old Rami Cooks, who had been taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting, died later on Thursday, authorities said.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner in a statement identified the other victims as Keith Basinski, 50; Ronald Edberg, 58; Jacob Beneke, 34; and Reuven Rahamim, 61, who was the company founder. The company is known for a process of making interior signs with durable Braille text lettering.
One man remained in critical condition and another was in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Another person was treated and released.
Thursday's shooting was reported at 4:35 p.m. CDT (5.35 p.m. EDT). As officers arrived on the scene and entered the front of the building, they immediately encountered shooting victims, Dolan said. Paramedics then entered without waiting for the scene to be secured.
Rahamim, an Israeli immigrant, started a sign business out of his basement that grew to have 28 employees and an expected revenue of $5 million to $10 million this year, according to the publication Finance & Commerce.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said Friday in a Facebook posting that Rahamim "was so proud of everything that he and his family have built in this country, and he had a right to be".
The Minneapolis shooting was a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine.
This followed a July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.
Minnesota work-place homicide records date back only to 1992 and no one incident had resulted in more than two homicides.
Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Major cancer protein amplifies global gene expression, NIH study finds Public release date: 27-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Scientists may have discovered why a protein called MYC can provoke a variety of cancers. Like many proteins associated with cancer, MYC helps regulate cell growth. A study carried out by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and colleagues found that, unlike many other cell growth regulators, MYC does not turn genes on or off, but instead boosts the expression of genes that are already turned on.
These findings, which will be published in Cell on Sept. 28, could lead to new therapeutic strategies for some cancers.
"We carried out a highly sophisticated analysis of MYC activity in cells, but came away with a simple rule. MYC is not a power switch but a universal amplifier," said co-lead study author Keji Zhao, Ph.D., director of the Systems Biology Center at the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). "This discovery offers a unifying idea of how and why abnormal levels of MYC are found in so many different cancer types, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and several blood cancers."
"MYC is much like the volume control of a music player," added co-lead David Levens, M.D., Ph.D., a senior investigator in the Laboratory of Pathology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), also part of NIH. "If you're listening to opera, for example, adding more MYC will make the opera louder, but it won't change the program to rap. And if you have only silence, MYC will just give you more silence."
Both researchers noted that this new understanding of MYC function could influence future treatment efforts for MYC-associated tumors. They suggest that trying to limit MYC activity, or turning down the volume just the right amount, would be a better strategy than using targeted chemotherapy to try to eliminate all MYC activity.
MYC aids in cell activation, a process in which cells mature and divide quickly. During an immune response, for example, white blood cells are activated to help fight infections. If activation isn't properly regulated, then cells can start growing out of control and result in cancer. Researchers have known that abnormally high levels of MYC can lead to cancer, but until now, no one had been able to explain how it can lead to so many different cancers.
Zhao, Levens, and their colleagues used a specially designed fluorescent protein that allowed them to track MYC in white blood cells in a lab dish. They chose white blood cells, specifically B cells and T cells that fight infections, because they are frequently affected by abnormal MYC and can transform into lymphoma and myeloma cells.
The team exposed the B and T cells to foreign toxins to stimulate an immune response and activate the fluorescent MYC. The researchers could then examine the cells at different time points and see which genes the MYC proteins seemed to affect.
The analysis revealed that MYC didn't prefer any specific type of gene. Instead, MYC proteins were present at nearly every gene that was already expressed, or turned on. The researchers also noticed that the amount of MYC at each expressed gene correlated with how active that gene was prior to immune stimulation. The more active the gene, the more MYC gathered there. MYC appeared to amplify productivity relative to the initial expression levels where it gave a small boost to genes with low activity and a big boost to genes with high activity.
The researchers validated the idea of MYC as a universal amplifier by developing a set of B cells that did not produce functional MYC. When they were stimulated, the total cellular amount of RNAan indicator of how much protein is being madedid not rise. When normal B cells were activated, the total cellular RNA did rise.
The research team then conducted the same analysis in embryonic stem cells and got similar results.

EVIL SPIRITS?: Boxed wines have many environmental advantages over bottled, but some of the plastic bags inside the boxes contain BPA, a synthetic chemical that has been linked to a range of human health problems. Dear EarthTalk: I am a retailer and have had customers ask whether the plastic bags in wine boxes are BPA free or not. What can I tell them??Chris Tod, via e-mail
The short answer is: ?It depends.? A fairly recent innovation in wine packaging, the so-called Bag-in-Box (BIB) dispenser makes use of a plastic bag with a nozzle surrounded by a corrugated cardboard box. The whole package sits easily on a shelf and usually features a built-in spout for easy pouring and resealing. The main benefit is that each box can hold about four bottles-worth of wine, and the BIB technology prevents oxidation, keeping the wine fresh for up to six weeks after the seal has been broken initially.
Besides costing less to manufacture than glass bottles, the Bag-in-Box apparatus, invented by Scholle packaging a half century ago, weighs significantly less, stacks more efficiently (meaning more wine can go with each container load) and will not shatter if dropped. As such, they are easier to transport, which keeps costs down and reduces the carbon footprint of the entire distribution process. While U.S. wine buyers traditionally have viewed wine in a box as cheap and unsavory, several American and European wineries are working to turn that view around by putting out award-winning vintages by the box. Eco-conscious yet no less discriminating wine consumers are helping to drive the growing demand for boxed wines in the U.S., which currently command about 10 percent of U.S. supermarket wine sales.
But boxed wine may have an environmental dark side: Some of the plastic bags inside the boxes contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), a synthetic chemical that has been in use for four decades to strengthen plastic food containers and other items but recently has been linked to a range of human health problems. ?A growing amount of scientific research has linked BPA exposure to altered development of the brain and behavioral changes, a predisposition to prostate and breast cancer, reproductive harm, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease,? reports the non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
The bags are made out of #7 plastic, a catchall category typically containing mixed types of plastic (?polycarbonate?), combined for various practical reasons. As more and more research comes to light, many environmentalists and public health advocates are warning consumers to avoid storing any food or drinks in containers made out of #7 plastic, as there is likelihood that BPA could be part of the mix.
Most wineries offering boxed wines make it clear if their plastic bags do not contain BPA. For one, Scholle Packaging, inventors of the BIB system and one of the largest wine box manufacturers, uses only BPA-free #7 plastic in their bags. Perini, Campo Largo, Bota Box and many other box wines come in BPA-free packaging. The simple way to know is to read the labels when you?re wine shopping.
Also, don?t think that by avoiding boxed wine you are necessarily avoiding BPA. Researchers have found that the plastic stoppers so many of us use to cap an unfinished bottle, not to mention the lining of concrete vats used to store wine at many wineries, contain and can leach BPA into your glass. That?s not to say that all wine contains BPA; quite the contrary, in fact, as most bottled wine still never comes into contact with plastic and as such does not carry any BPA-stigma. Regardless, the more you know, the safer you can be?so that the worst thing you get from your wine is a hangover.

Public criticism of Mitt Romney's race for the White House has risen sharply, with six in 10 Americans expressing a negative opinion of how he's handling his campaign and a majority responding unfavorably to his comments on people who don't pay income taxes.
Sixty-one percent in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll hold an unfavorable view of how Romney's handling his presidential campaign, up by 12 percentage points since mid-July. Far fewer, 35 percent, rate Romney's performance positively, essentially unchanged.
See PDF with full results, charts and tables here.
Barack Obama's ratings for handling his campaign are substantially better, 54-43 percent, favorable-unfavorable. And while ratings of Romney's campaign have grown more negative, favorable ratings of Obama's campaign efforts have gained 8 points since July.
These ratings follow controversy last week about Romney's remark at a Florida fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes, see themselves as "victims" and lack personal responsibility. Fifty-four percent in this survey, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, see his "recent comments about people who don't pay income taxes" negatively; 32 percent respond favorably, with the rest unsure.
There's also an intensity problem for Romney: Americans disproportionately see his handling of his campaign "strongly" unfavorably rather than strongly favorably, 36 percent vs. 10 percent; it's a similar split on his comment on those who don't pay taxes. Strong sentiment on Obama's campaign, by contrast, is evenly balanced.
As damaging as Romney's remark may have been, it appears not to be solely responsible for Romney's weak grade on handling his campaign, since ratings of his campaign performance overall are 7 points more negative than are responses to that comment. Indeed, even among those who see the "47 percent" remark favorably, nearly three in 10 also respond negatively to Romney's handling of his campaign overall.
In a sign of particular trouble for Romney, negative views of his campaign have grown by 18 points since midsummer among independents, who often are swing voters. In July, 46 percent of independents rated Romney's handling of his campaign negatively; it's 64 percent today. Romney's positive score among independents, at 32 percent, far trails Obama's, 50 percent.
Even among Republicans, more than one in four rates Romney's efforts negatively - 27 percent. While essentially unchanged since July, that's substantially more than the share of Democrats who respond negatively to Obama's work on his campaign, 11 percent.
As well as among independents, negative views of Romney's handling of his campaign have grown especially sharply among adults under age 40 - up by 23 points since July, to 69 percent negative - and among women, with negative responses up by 18 points. And there's a large gap among income groups: a 16-point rise in negative ratings of Romney's campaign among people with household incomes less than $100,000 a year, vs. essentially no change among those with incomes of $100,000 or more.
Less than well-off adults also are more critical of Romney's "47 percent" comment, responding negatively rather than positively by 57-28 percent. Those with incomes of $100,000 or more, by contrast, divide evenly - they're 18 points more supportive of the remark.
Obama, for his part, gets especially positive grades for handling his campaign, 60 percent, from people with household incomes of $50,000 or less; that falls to less than half of those who are better off financially. Still his rating is 17 points better than Romney's even in the $50,000-$100,000 range; only among $100,000-plus earners does Romney's campaign rival Obama's.
Among other groups, Obama's campaign efforts are rated positively by majorities of women, adults younger than 40, moderates (as well as liberals) and (especially) nonwhites; those compare with even splits among men and among people 40 and older. Among whites, Obama's 45-51 percent rating, favorable-unfavorable, is not positive - but beats Romney's 39-56 percent.
While these results are among all adults, they're essentially identical among those who report being registered to vote: Negative on Romney's campaign by 61-36 percent; negative on his tax comment by 54-33 percent; and positive on Obama's campaign efforts by 53-45 percent.
METHODOLOGY - This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone Sept. 19-23, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,012 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4 points, including design effect. The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by SSRS/Social Science Research Solutions of Media, Pa.
In today?s economy, working from home makes more sense than taking on a second job. Being the owner of a small business might be hard for you in the beginning, but as sole proprietor, you will be able to use MLM to make money and enrich the lives of others. This article has many useful tips to help you start and succeed with MLM.
You should allocate time for friends and family members because those relationships can help reduce the stress in your life. It is also important to maintain your connections with these important people. You may have to dedicate more time to your business at first, but as profits grow, you should be able to take time off for your loved ones.
Multi-level marketing success relies on your having a reliable email database. You can purchase email databases or compile the data from your own website. Regardless, a substantial email database will allow you to reach out to as many people as possible.
Make sure your down line is active and communicative. Are they uncomfortable actively engaging with people? Is there a problem they?re afraid to talk about? Reassure them that they can always come to you for answers, and encourage them to get to know the other network members. A multi-level marketing team that communicates openly will run more smoothly, and the team members will be happier.
When meeting with someone you have met through MLM, keep the meeting to no more than 45 minutes. This will give your multilevel marketing lead the impression that you are successful as a business person.
Helping people, instead of selling them something, can really help you in MLM. Rather than focusing on what is great about your product, focus on how it can help a person with a problem they may have. Individuals will find your product much more appealing.
Be someone who is revered in network marketing. Be creative, and try to think of unique things that you can offer. Offering something unique can cause your competitors to copy you, in hopes that they can generate the same kind of booming business you?re getting. Try to find a specific niche for your network marketing business, rather than copying someone.
It is crucial to drive traffic to your web site. While this can be the hardest part of multilevel marketing, it can spell you success or failure. Once someone is on your site, he or she can make a better decision on whether to buy something since this person can see what you?re selling.
While it is common sense, it is worth noting that setting goals for yourself will bring you far in multi-level marketing. From start to finish, you must always set goals for yourself, and work to meet or exceed them. This can help your mental status and provide extra incentive as you work.
If something goes wrong in your multi-level marketing campaign, you can use that information to do better next time. Study your failures and understand where you went wrong. Knowing your weaknesses is the only way to correct them. Always learn from your failures, and apply that knowledge to avoid the same mistakes in the future. Likewise, repeat those things that are successful.
Take the time to listen to what experienced network marketers have to say. They are a valuable resource that should be taken advantage of. Consider using a podcast because this is an excellent method of doing this. You may find something quite worthwhile to you if you just take the time to sample listen to some.
Big companies utilize MLM as one method to get to an audience through your business, and the network of contacts you can provide them. You should have an easier time getting into multi-level marketing and making it work for you if you make use of the advice this article has given you

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican has certainly seen more sensational trials in its long history. The Inquisition ordered Galileo to recant his theory that the earth revolves around the sun, and philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for heresy.
But even those cases, both in the 17th century, did not involve a breach of trust by a papal aide - the issue at the core of this Saturday's trial of papal butler Paolo Gabriele for stealing and leaking the pontiff's personal papers.
One of the worst crises in Pope Benedict's papacy will play out in a small Vatican tribunal, where a three-judge panel will decide the fate of the 46-year-old Gabriele, whom the pope used to call "Paoletto" (little Paul) and who is now described in Vatican documents as "the defendant".
The case will put the inner workings of the tiny Vatican, the world's smallest state, in the type of media spotlight it usually strives to avoid.
The man who served Pope Benedict his meals and helped him dress is charged with aggravated theft for leaking private papers in a self-styled attempt to clean up what he saw as evil and corruption in the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.
The documents pointed to a power struggle at the church's highest levels.
Gabriele, who said he saw himself as a whistle-blowing "agent of the Holy Spirit", risks up to four years in jail if convicted, which is widely expected to be the outcome of the case because he has confessed.
ITALIAN JAIL
Since the Vatican is a monarchy where the pope reigns supreme, the trial will start when the president of the tribunal, standing in front of a crucifix, says, "In the name of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI ...".
The trial procedures will be based on a 19th century Italian penal code.
The wood-paneled courtroom, which can hold only several dozen people and has an ornate papal crest at the centre of its ceiling, is the venue for about 30 trials a year, usually for petty crimes such as theft in St Peter's Square, according to Prof. Giovanni Giacobbe, an expert on Vatican law who briefed reporters.
It is not clear how long the trial might last.
Gabriele, a father of three living a simple but comfortable life in the city-state, told investigators after his arrest in May that he believed a shock "could be a healthy thing to bring the Church back on the right track".
The trusted manservant said he wanted to help root out the corruption, "because the pope was not sufficiently informed", according to details made public when Gabriele was indicted in August.
"The Pope cannot tell the judge what verdict to reach, but he can intervene at any time if he wants to, and he can also grant a pardon," Giacobbe said.
Since the papal state has no prison, Gabriele would serve time in an Italian jail if he is convicted and the pope does not pardon him.
TELEVISION NOT ALLOWED
Either side at the trial can call witnesses, but the president of the court will decide on each request. The prosecution and the defense cannot directly question the defendant or witnesses but must do so through the judge, Giacobbe said.
The trial will be covered by a pool of eight reporters. Television cameras and recording devices will be not be allowed in the courtroom, but the Vatican will release a short, silent video clip of the opening of each session of the trial.
Gabriele's arrest capped nearly five months of intrigue and suspense as a string of documents and private letters found their way into the Italian media.
The most notorious of the letters were written to the pope by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, currently the Vatican's ambassador to Washington, who was deputy governor of Vatican City at the time.
In one, Vigano complains that when he took office in 2009, he discovered corruption, nepotism and cronyism linked to the awarding of contracts to outside companies at inflated prices.
Vigano later wrote to the pope about a smear campaign against him by other Vatican officials who were upset that he had taken drastic steps to clean up the purchasing procedures.
Despite begging not to be moved away from the Vatican, Vigano was later transferred to Washington by Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's number two.
Other leaked letters concerned the Vatican's bank, which has been at the centre of several scandals in the last few decades.
The Vatican has described the revelations as a "brutal" attack on the pope. Benedict himself has merely alluded to personal pain and criticised a media portrayal of the Vatican that "does not correspond to reality".
Gabriele will go on trial alongside Claudio Sciarpelletti, a Vatican computer expert who is charged with aiding and abetting a crime. Sciarpelletti risks up to one year in jail.
